World Green Building Week (11–15 September 2024) aimed to advance the sustainable building movement under the themes #BuildingTheTransition and "Reduce. Electrify. Adapt.". These two themes highlight the role of green buildings in combating the global climate crisis and focus on accelerating the transition to sustainability.
#BuildingTheTransition: Constructing the Shift
#BuildingTheTransition is a global call to accelerate the construction of sustainable and resilient cities. As the effects of climate change intensify, building with energy efficiency, low carbon emissions, and environmentally friendly materials becomes increasingly critical.
Reduce: The Importance of Minimizing Energy and Resource Use
Highlighted by the World Green Building Council (WGBC), “Reduce” emphasizes the urgency of minimizing our current energy consumption and resource use. Today, buildings are responsible for 37% of global energy use and 39% of carbon emissions.
Electrify: Clean Energy to Cut Carbon Emissions
Electrification is a key component of sustainable buildings. A large portion of buildings' energy needs is still met by fossil fuels, which increases carbon emissions. According to WGBC’s strategy, transitioning buildings to electricity powered by clean energy sources will be a critical step toward achieving carbon neutrality.
Adapt: Resilient Structures for Changing Climate Conditions
Climate change requires not only changes in energy usage but also in how buildings are designed. "Adapt" refers to making buildings more resilient to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and other climate-related risks that are expected to occur more frequently in the future.
A Roadmap Toward a Sustainable Future
The 2024 World Green Building Week’s theme, "Reduce. Electrify. Adapt." reminds us all of the need for increased efforts to combat climate change. This year’s events reinforced that green buildings are not only eco-friendly, but also key to creating resilient, energy-efficient, and healthy living spaces.
